We now offer fantastically flexible made-to-measure modular storage systems. Made of 100% solid European oak or solid American black walnut, our Tatra system is designed and built to an exceptional standard. Whether it's a small unit to fit into an alcove, or a large wall system to display a collection, the Tatra is a functional solution for all storage needs.

Tatra was created due to the need for a solid wood modular storage system that could dismantle for delivery (to enable delivery of large storage units we needed it to come in sections that we build in situ – one that can get up staircases, over banisters and around tight corners).

Over the last decade the design duo of Leo Cellar and Frans Hamers have developed their workshop into one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of high quality, well designed furniture. They particularly like working with solid oak and walnut and still do most of the work by hand. They do, however, use modern technology to cut and measure the wood – their state of the art CNC machines are an important part of the process. Timber is dried at the workshop’s own kilns and stored in moisture controlled barns. All pieces are hand finished with tints and oils.

How you want to design the modular system is totally up to you. You can create your own bookshelves, cupboard, library, room divider, media unit - the options are yours. We've created 10 simple steps to guide you through the process of designing your own Tatra system. We are here online, on the phone and in our three shops to talk you through the various options in more detail.

And don't forget these units are assembled in situ - our delivery team will build them for you on delivery, so we can take the stress out of any access issue. The world of designing the Tatra unit is your oyster!

Out and about in London town, we happened to bump into the editor of Futurefrock, Alice Wilby, and were very excited to chat to her about her trend-setting online magazine.

An up-and-coming source of high end fashion, beauty and lifestyle news, Futurefrock has been created for "discerning fashionistas who don't want to compromise their ethnical beliefs in order to feed their style fixes."

As strong ethical principles are so core to Chest of Drawers, we felt a Karmic connection to the ethos behind Futurefrock, and couldn't be more thrilled to learn about what inspires them.

Here are our favourite finds from their site:

On a trip to Paris for the Ethical Fashion Shows, Futurefrock took some time out to visit Centre Commerical, Veja’s lifestyle store in the uber trendy Canal Saint Martin. Created by the two founders of Veja, Centre Commercial is a collective space which unites local, social and environmental initiatives. Definitely one for the travel diary!

We've just launched the very cool oak Metamorphic folding table-cum-chair, as designed by the British furniture and product designer, John Reeves, and exclusive to Chest of Drawers. This innovative yet simple design offers a versatile solid oak side table which doubles up as a chair.

In this stunning design, John Reeves re-visits the idea of multi functionalism and metamorphosis. The result is a beautiful side table that can remain as that, or alternatively be transformed into an equally striking chair. The contoured scoop of the back rest is used as a handle to lever open the table to become a side chair.

From the side view, the opening function is perfectly disguised, so you would never guess its clever dual nature.

When not in use, these tables/chairs can be stacked helically as high as you dare, due to the specially moulded shape on the inside of the legs. This metamorphic piece is ideal for city living where clever use of space is paramount, or simply for those who adhere to a more minimalist style of interior.

Available to buy in-store and on-line. Price: £345.00. Introductory offer: £295.00.

Jason and I went on an incredibly inspiring trip to the Maison et Objet show in Paris last week and came across the Portuguese company Carlos Alfredo. As we inspected the traditional joinery methods used in making these surprisingly modern and innovative designs, we were offered the finest port wine.

The company has been successfully trading for over half a decade making traditional dining suites. However, the Wewood venture is a new platform in which the company collaborates with young independent designers, breathing fresh life into conventional joinery methods.

Amongst my favourites was a chest of drawers called Touch by design studio Suricata.

Each drawer has a gentle curve enabling a hidden handle, as well as a slow closing mechanism. The base is made from steel, allowing the entire unit to appear as though it's hovering weightlessly above the ground.

Another piece, the BS01 desk designed by Bruno Serraro, has a ludicrous amount of hidden storage compartments, drawers and a cable guard built into the top. A very clever solution to consolidate storage.

It was incredibly impressive to see such fun and thoughtful design made for solid wood. One of the highlights of my visit this year without a doubt!

“The bed has become a place of luxury to me! I would not exchange it for all the thrones in the world.” - Napolean Bonaparte

Why is bed and mattress sizing so confusing?

There are mattresses, bed and bedding makers all over the world, and they often have their own naming conventions. In this global day and age, this means we might mix bedding from America, mattresses from Wales, and beds from Europe, so it's no wonder people become confused!

Are there any standards?

In general bed sizes are referred to by the mattress that they take, not the actual dimensions of the bed frame. So let's get mattress sizing straight first of all. Standard mattress sizes used to be just that – standard. But nowadays the name of a mattress is not only referred to by its width dimension, but also by the terms single, double, standard double, and so on. Using these names made sense when there wasn't so much choice, but now the world is your oyster when it comes to all things sleep related. Here's our translation which we hope clarifies it.

The low down on UK sizing...

There are currently four standard UK sizes. Yes, we know there are anomalies but these are the standards. Depending on who you talk to, however, you will find they might have different names. For example, some stores call a 5' bed a 'queen' and a 6' bed a 'king', whereas others may call a 5' bed a 'king', and a 6' bed a 'super king'. Their actual sizes are: 3' wide, 4'6” wide, 5' wide and 6' wide. The 3' wide is for one person, the 4'6” is the most common size of double bed, the 5' wide is just that little bit bigger and the 6' is the largest and arguably most luxurious choice. Be aware that the length of mattresses differ. the UK 3' and 4'6" widths are 6'3" long. The UK 5' and 6' are 6'6" long.

...and continental sizing

As the furniture market has become more and more globalised, continental bed frames have appeared, causing some confusion with both metric and imperial measurements on the market. Again these beds correspond to mattress size and are referred to by the width, not names. There is a 90cm wide, a 140cm wide, a 150cm wide, a 160cm wide and a 180cm wide. They are usually all 200cm long. Remember these bed sizes are still referring to the mattress which they take, not frame dimensions. Here on our website we try and make it simple.

Our names

We sell both continental and standard UK sizes and we can also make mattresses in custom sizes should you need that. We've listed both measurements so you can easily pair a mattress with a bed. Just use the measurements if you are uncertain of the names. Please be reassured that our mattresses will fit all of our beds regardless of the small discrepancy between metric and imperial sizes.

Is that it?

It's worth mentioning that mattresses now come in a range of thicknesses. It used to be that a standard 8” thick mattress was the norm, but now you can have much thicker mattresses, and some of these will just fit more snugly into a bed frame. This shouldn't present any problems as both beds and bedding fit most mattress thicknesses.

Still unsure about what size to buy?

We say go as big as your room allows! The Sleep Council recommends that you choose a bed 4-6 inches longer than the tallest person who will sleep in it. This means that anyone over the height of 6 foot tall should think more about investing in a larger size bed. And if two people are sharing a bed, there should be enough room to move about without disturbing each other.

Most importantly, don't forget to measure up beforehand! In addition to measuring to ensure the bed will fit into the room, we advise that you also consider how much space you will want around the bed. We recommend it's a good idea to have a good amount of space between both sides and foot of the bed and the walls so the furniture in the room doesn't appear too cramped.

Delivery & assembly

All of our beds dismantle for delivery. Our delivery team can install and assemble the bed for you should you choose that service. In any case we are always happy to assist in the selection of sizes over the telephone, in the shops or via our on line chat feature.

Part 1: Size and style

The English novelist Virginia Woolf once wrote, “One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well."

A dining table is one of those essential pieces of furniture which makes life that little bit better. Harking back in history, the dining table has always held great importance. In the Middle Ages, the dining table was used as a central part of the Great Hall, a large and heavily decorated room where the upper echelons of society would dine in castles or large manor houses. Modern life may be very different from the days of great royal banquets, but the dining table has remained an essential part of domestic life. That is why we are here to help guide you through the process of picking the best table to suit you and your lifestyle. Finding the perfect dining table may seem a little daunting at first, but it needn't be.

The first question to ask yourself is – how many people do you want to seat? As a rough guide, our 160cm tables seat around six people comfortably, usually distributed with two on each side and one at each end. A 180cm table will take three adults comfortably on each side. The same pattern applies to 200cm and 220cm tables for eight adults. We can make extra large dining tables right up to five metres long and the larger the dining table the more flexible the seating can become, but as a general rule you should allow for at least 40cm – 50cm per person.

One unexpected consequence of this is that a shorter table doesn't always give you more space! If length is restricted it can sometimes be better to go for a 180cm or 220cm over a 160cm or 200cm, to keep the ends of the table clear.

Of course the total number you can accommodate is also affected by your style of dining. For informal dining with family or friends who you are happy to rub shoulders with, an extra two places can often be squeezed onto a 180cm or 220cm dining table. If you are keen to get as many people as possible sat around a smaller table, then a bench is a great option as this will fit more people on one side than chairs. This works particularly well for children. Stools can also be used to accommodate extra people at a pinch.

Once you have decided on the size and type of dining table, it is now time to consider the type of wood. Arguably, softwood and veneer are not as suitable for today's wear and tear. If veneer table tops are damaged, a lot more work is involved in hiding the damage as they can't be sanded to remove the marks and scratches. With this in mind, we specialise in solid hardwoods: teak, oak and walnut, which all wear extremely well. Solid hardwoods can also be sanded and re-oiled or waxed, meaning that you can care for and maintain your furniture over the years. In terms of colour, oak is the lightest of the woods, teak is slightly darker with more of a reddy-brown tone, and walnut is the darkest. Of course, the choice of wood is a very personal decision, and in more cases than not, comes down to an aesthetic preference. The look of the wood is largely affected by the type of finish you choose. Read part 2 of our guide to find out more about finish and aftercare..

"Dining is and always was a great artistic opportunity." - Frank Lloyd Wright

Choosing the finish of the wood is as important as choosing the wood itself. We offer a number of different finishes on our oak dining tables. The best selling finish for our oak tables is the natural oiled finish, which is arguably the most 'user friendly'. The brilliant thing about this finish is that if it gets marked it can be sanded and re-oiled. We also offer a white oiled finish which gives a cleaner and more contemporary look to the table. If however, you are looking for something extra unique, then it's definitely worth considering some of our special finishes, like the white wash or white lime.

Our teak dining tables are great if you're looking for something fuss free, as they come unfinished. Teak has a high level of natural oil in the wood, and so has great built-in natural protection. Our teak dining tables are glass polished and have no finishing product applied to them. As our teak dining tables mature, the wood becomes a gorgeous warm, rich, auburn colour.

If you like the wood to have a more matured look, we also sell smoked or steamed tables. Smoking the wood involves a process of putting smoke into the kiln, where the wood is dried. Here, the ammonia in the smoke reacts with the tannin in the wood, darkening it and giving a similar result to wood that has been matured for 50-100 years. You simply can't get this effect with any other finish, so it is a great short cut to an aged piece of wood if you don't have decades to wait for a table!

Whatever type of wood and finish you decide to go for, all of our tables are made out of 100% solid hardwood. The beauty of this is that two tables are never identical. It is to be expected that the wood will show natural grain patterns, blemishes and knots, all of which are natural and unique features.

By this stage, you should be very pleased with your choice of style, wood and finish of dining table, so all that's left is delivery and assembly. A solid wood table is very heavy, so we advise you use our delivery company who have specialised teams. All of our table legs are dismantled for transport and our specialist delivery teams will be more than happy to assemble the table in the room of your choice.

We spotted this vibrant lighting last week, and just couldn't take our eyes off it!

It's fun because you can choose different sizes, loads of coloured shades and mix the coloured flex to create your own combination. An added bonus comes in the form of a charitable donation made for each one sold. The designer Bonnelycke mdd donates a percentage of each purchase to a fund that supports a social cause in India through the charity Enable Denmark. We love the colour and the story behind it.

We're looking forward to getting them on display in all our shops shortly. Watch this space!

Rosie Teasdale, Deputy Director at FSC-UK, talks to Kim Corbett

When we began research for our furniture rating label back in 2003 we asked forest campaigners at Greenpeace to identify gaps in our scheme. While they were enthusiastic about the label, they were very clear that the best independent & credible certification scheme was the FSC.

We didn't have even 1 FSC product at the time so we went about looking for interior hardwood products with FSC chain of custody certification. We found very little. A lot has changed since then and now over 40% of what we offer is FSC certified. We commission our own designs in FSC oak and ash and we have two large workshops who have demonstrated their commitment by undertaking FSC certification.

To get a handle of the history and workings of the FSC I asked Rosie a few questions:

Kim: How does the FSC work and how long has it been around?

Rosie: The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification scheme was established in 1993 in response to growing concern about global deforestation and demand for a trustworthy wood-labelling scheme. FSC has developed a system of forest certification and product labelling that allows consumers to identify wood and wood-based products from well-managed forests.

FSC certified forests are independently audited against FSC’s strict environmental, social and economic standards. The wood, or other products from the forest, is then tracked through the supply chain. Each link in the chain is audited to ensure that non-FSC material is not mixed with the FSC wood or fibre. This gives consumers the confidence that they can buy forest products, safe in the knowledge that they are not supporting deforestation or illegal logging.

Kim: What types of product carry the FSC label? And what should customers know about the label?

Rosie : The label can be found on a wide range of forest products. Most commonly, the label is seen on wood products, such as garden furniture, kitchen utensils and toys and on paper products, such as tissues, books and greetings cards. An increasing number of “non timber forest products” also carry the FSC labeal, including rubber gloves, footballs, essential oils and nuts.

The FSC label on a wood or forest product is your assurance that it is made with, or contains, fibre from FSC certified forests or from post-consumer waste.

Kim: Why is the certification of forest management of natural forests so important?

Rosie: Natural forests throughout the world are threatened by global demand for forest products which will not only continue, but also accelerate. Much of the world’s remaining natural forests still suffer from illegal exploitation, poor management and conversion to other land uses, commonly resulting in severe degradation or complete destruction. In some countries as much as 80% of the timber is harvested illegally, often in violation of human rights and causing destruction of protected forests. A key factor behind the threats faced by natural forests is the perception by many societies that they lack economic value.

FSC certification can offer a financially competitive alternative to poor practice, illegal logging and conversion to other land-uses. The application of the FSC standards can result in substantial social and environmental improvements and ultimately support the conservation and long-term maintenance of these forests. To withdraw from applying the FSC standards to logging in natural forests, would not end further exploration of natural forests, but could, instead, result in unsustainable logging practices and deforestation.

Kim: What does the FSC do to increase the sustainability of the world's forests?

Rosie: In order for a forest to be FSC certified, a management plan must be agreed and enforced. This plan must address issues such as protecting endangered species, respecting the rights of indigenous people and ensuring a long-term timber supply. As businesses and consumers choose FSC certified products, the increase in the demand reaches back through the supply chain, encouraging more forest managers to gain certification. The promotion of FSC certified products also reduces the market for illegally logged timber.

Kim: How does the work that's done by the FSC in the UK compare to that of other countries?

Rosie: The UK is one of the leading markets for FSC certified products. FSC UK is a registered charity and works to support and promote the FSC system. Whilst one of our key objectives is to ensure there is an approved FSC Forest Management standard for use in the UK, much of our work is aimed at increasing the market for FSC. The growing demand for FSC in the UK, from consumers, businesses and the public sector, generates a market for FSC material from around the world. We are working with forest managers, certified manufacturers, registered retailers and supportive NGOs, such as WWF and Greenpeace, to increase this demand.

UK businesses account for 10% of all FSC certificates in the world and we believe that with continued education and development for consumers and industry, the UK can become an example of excellence in forest product sourcing.

Kim: We can say anecdotally that more and more customers are familiar with the FSC logo today than they were even a year ago, but are you satisfied with the way consumer awareness is growing?

Rosie: We have commissioned independent polls annually since 2007 and the increase in recognition of the FSC logo over recent years has been significant. The number of people questioned who had seen the FSC logo before rose from 19% in 2007 to 43% in 2011. In the under 45 age groups, the increase is even greater, rising from 21% to 53%, and the figures are higher still in the under 25s.. There has also been a large increase in the number of people knowingly buying FSC products, from 11% to 33%.

During 2011, International Year of Forests, FSC UK focused on raising consumer awareness through exhibitions at events such as Chelsea Flower Show and Glastonbury Festival. We have also worked with WWF on their “What Wood You Choose?” campaign, promoting FSC, and with the Forestry Commission on the “Love Forests” project.

The annual celebration of “FSC Friday” takes place on the last Friday in September. This awareness raising event was initiated by FSC UK in 2008 but is now recognised internationally, with a wide range of activities taking place around the world. We hope that this celebration of the world’s forests will help further increase recognition of the logo and create greater demand for FSC.

Kim: It takes so long to regrow trees that it can sound ridiculous to say that planting trees can offset the effect of deforestation. How do you respond to this statement?

Rosie: The FSC system recognises the value of plantations in terms of reducing the pressure on natural forests, and has strict standards for the certification of plantations. However, the certification of plantations is only one aspect of FSC. Natural forests, including tropical rainforests, can be FSC certified as long as appropriate management plans are agreed, with appropriate rates of harvesting.

The FSC approach is holistic and cannot be reduced to “planting a tree for every one that is chopped down”. Whilst management plans must ensure that trees are planted or allowed to regenerate naturally, this is only one aspect. Obviously the growth rates differ from species to species and the management plans must be tailored to the forest type. In Precious Woods’ operations in the Amazon, for example, logging is highly selective with only 3-4 trees per hectare harvested once every 25 years.

Kim: What can consumers do, besides buying FSC certified products, to support your work?

Rosie: We would encourage consumers to look for FSC labelled products and, if they cannot find them, to ask. Any increase in demand feeds back through the supply chain and should result in an increase in the area of forest that is certified to FSC standards.

As a registered charity, FSC UK does rely on donations from businesses, charitable trusts and individual supporters. Anyone wishing to support our work can make a donation, e.g. through thebiggive.org.uk or, for £20 per year, they can become an FSC supporter. Our supporters receive a welcome pack of FSC products, a quarterly magazine and discounts from a range of FSC retailers.

Kim: Why is it necessary that retailers like us promote FSC products?

Rosie: FSC UK is only a small charity and we rely on retailers such as Chest of Drawers to help raise awareness of the importance of choosing FSC products. Consumers are often more conscious of FSC when they are buying garden furniture or timber for DIY projects. It’s great to see other FSC products, like household furniture, being offered to the consumer and we appreciate any help the retailers can offer in order to increase recognition of the FSC system. Our research has shown that, once consumers are aware of the meaning behind the FSC label, they are much more likely to look for FSC products in future. If we can work together to increase this logo recognition, the demand for FSC products and forests should increase, ultimately resulting in more well-managed forests and a reduced market for illegally logged timber.

Kim: Thanks Rosie. Readers, please check out the FSC videos for a complete history of the organisation that really seems to be making a difference.
